Use Your Wyze Camera Without a Subscription

Wyze is a tricky one. The cameras record 24/7 to a local microSD card for free, but they do NOT expose RTSP or ONVIF out of the box — everything else goes through the Wyze app and cloud. Cam Plus is optional (it adds cloud person/vehicle detection and longer event clips), so you can drop it and still get local SD recording.

Does Wyze lock your camera when you cancel?

Mostly yes. By default Wyze cameras have no RTSP or ONVIF output — you can't point RSC or VLC at them. The one exception is Wyze's own (now largely deprecated) RTSP firmware for the Cam v2, v3 and Pan, which turns on a basic RTSP stream.

What happens when you cancel

Without Cam Plus you lose cloud person/vehicle detection and long cloud clips, but a microSD card keeps recording continuously for free — that footage is viewable in the Wyze app. There is still no third-party (RTSP/ONVIF) stream unless you flash the RTSP firmware.

Wyze gotchas worth knowing

  • No ONVIF, ever — Wyze has never shipped ONVIF.
  • The RTSP firmware is community-supported at best and unavailable on newer models (Cam v4, OG); don't count on it for a new purchase.
  • Local SD recording is free and continuous — don't pay for Cam Plus just to record.
  • Wyze cameras depend on the cloud to even set up; a fully offline Wyze is not really a thing.

Cancelling Wyze: your options

  1. In the Wyze app → Services, cancel Cam Plus (or let the trial lapse). Local microSD recording keeps working.
  2. Decide whether app-only + SD is enough, or you want a real local stream.
  3. For a real stream: flash the Wyze RTSP firmware on a supported model, or move to RSC on a phone / ONVIF camera.

The no-subscription alternative

RSC can't pull a stream Wyze doesn't expose. Two no-subscription paths: (1) on a supported model, flash Wyze's RTSP firmware and add the resulting rtsp://<user>:<pass>@<ip>/live stream to RSC; or (2) skip the lock-in entirely and run RSC on a spare phone or an ONVIF camera you own — local plus your-own-cloud recording, no monthly fee.
