What is RTSP? Why Your Security Camera Needs It (and How Vendors Hide It)

Almost every IP security camera speaks a protocol called RTSP — and understanding it is the key to owning your cameras instead of renting access to them. So what is RTSP, why does every camera need it, and why do vendors work so hard to hide it? Here it is in plain English.

What is RTSP?

RTSP stands for Real Time Streaming Protocol. Think of it as the language a camera uses to say "here's my live video, come and get it." When a viewer connects to an RTSP security camera, it requests the stream, the camera authenticates the request, and video flows in real time over your network.

  • 554 — the standard RTSP port.
  • /Streaming/Channels/101 — the path to a specific stream (brand-specific).

How to find your RTSP URL

  1. The camera's local IP — check your router's device list or a network scanner.
